This is not intended as an insult; indeed, it is the opposite, and it is a relief.The responses were provided by intelligent and articulate individuals from a variety of backgrounds, geographical locations, and experiences, including both history and misfortune, as well as notable achievements. However, despite their diverse individual narratives, the respondents' messages were, to a considerable extent, consistent in their content.
This observation suggests that these common themes must be of significant importance, and their efficacy is evident.
1. Be in a relationship for the right reasons.
Prior to delving into the recommended course of action for one's own relationship, it is imperative to first address the actions to be avoided.
It is imperative to avoid entering into a relationship under duress, whether from external pressures or personal convictions.For instance, the first marriage was entered into due to the prevailing cultural and religious expectations of the Catholic upbringing, yet it proved to be a misstep. The subsequent marriage was initiated due to a state of desolation and solitude, leading to the misguided belief that a spouse could remedy one's personal deficiencies. However, if a relationship is not conducive to one's well-being, whether due to its negative impact, its imbalance, or its tendency to create a sense of obligation, it is advisable to consider the option of disengagement. It is important to recognise that it is acceptable to disengage from friendships that are not beneficial to one's personal growth and development.
This perspective stands in contrast to the numerous advantages associated with strong friendships, including the potential for emotional and psychological growth.
LD: In a manner analogous to the salubrious effects of a robust relationship, a negative relationship is deleterious to one's well-being, and even an ambivalent relationship has been demonstrated to be biologically detrimental.
Friendship: The Evolution, Biology, and Extraordinary Power of Life's Fundamental Bond
An ambivalent relationship is defined as a relationship characterised by positive and negative feelings towards the person or the quality of the interaction. It is noteworthy that this ambivalence is prevalent in many relationships, with approximately half of them exhibiting such characteristics.
Researchers utilised a scale ranging from one to five, with one representing the most positive feelings and five representing the most negative feelings. Individuals who scored two or above on both dimensions were categorised as ambivalent, which is a relatively broad classification.For instance, a score of five on the positive scale could be accompanied by a score of two on the negative scale.Notably, relationships classified as ambivalent appeared to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular health concerns and other health complications.
While it is not unexpected that a toxic relationship would have a negative impact on one's health, the prevalence of ambivalent relationships, which many individuals experience, is a more noteworthy observation. It is presumed that the positive aspects of a relationship typically outweigh the negative ones. However, the current research, in its infancy, suggests otherwise.
This underscores the significance of nurturing relationships, including friendships, and the potential value of a positive friendship.
In the event that a friendship is not proceeding in a positive manner, there are a number of courses of action one can pursue. Firstly, one may wish to attempt to improve the situation, engaging in a candid dialogue with the other party. Secondly, one may elect to terminate the friendship and declare, "I am no longer willing to countenance this individual in my life." However, this course of action can be a highly dramatic one. Alternatively, one may choose to marginalise this friend, thereby gradually distancing oneself from their social circle. It is acknowledged that this may not be a person with whom regular contact can be easily maintained; however, if the emotional reliance on them is to be terminated, this course of action is to be recommended.
KN: Could you propose any practices or steps that you undertake in your own life to allocate more time and energy to friendship?
LD: The foundation for nurturing friendships lies in cultivating attention and establishing priorities. I endeavour to schedule regular get-togethers with my closest friends and those with whom I share a strong bond. Despite our hectic schedules, I prioritise making plans and ensuring my attendance, as I believe this is a pivotal aspect of friendship.
In instances where physical proximity is challenging, such as during periods of travel or busy schedules, the importance of communication via phone or video calls becomes evident. Such interactions allow for the maintenance of personal relationships and the sharing of life updates, which contributes to a sense of connection and mutual support.
Furthermore, it is noteworthy to acknowledge the scientific contributions to our understanding of a relationship. According to the findings, a relationship is deemed to be of quality if it meets three fundamental criteria: stability, longevity, positivity, and cooperation, characterised by mutual support, reciprocity, and the presence of a reliable network of individuals.
When interacting with friends, it is important to consider one's own contributions to the relationship. Have there been opportunities to be helpful or express appreciation recently? When was the last time a kind word or action was demonstrated?Friendship is a reliable presence in one's life, and it is essential to reflect on how interactions with friends align with these qualities.
This principle extends to online interactions, where positivity, helpfulness, and presence – whether through text, jokes, articles, or calls – are crucial.In light of recent stress and anxiety, it is essential to be available as a supportive and attentive presence, even in virtual spaces.
KN: In light of the current global pandemic, many individuals have been separated from their social circles for extended periods. What are the implications of this social isolation on our well-being?
LD: The experience of being in the presence of friends is characterised by a depth and richness that engages all of the senses. The absence of physical contact and the inability to read body language that is present when communicating via screen versus in person results in a noticeable discrepancy in the quality of the experience. While the precise neuroscientific underpinnings of these differences remain to be fully elucidated, it is evident that the absence of tactile interaction has a significant impact on the quality of the experience.
One of the automatic functions of the human brain when engaging in an in-person conversation is the natural sense of "call and response", whereby one person initiates a verbal exchange, followed by a response from the other person, and so on. This facilitates a process of reading each other's cues, thereby enhancing the ease of interaction.
Conversely, online interactions are often perceived as less natural due to the presence of technological lag, which can be disconcerting for our cognitive processes. Our brains are adept at discerning these differences in interaction style, and they tend to find them uncongenial. This may, in part, explain the challenges some individuals experience when engaging in virtual interactions. Furthermore, the absence of non-verbal cues in virtual interactions can exacerbate difficulties in discerning who will speak next in a group conversation, which is more readily managed through such cues in person.
In-person interactions are characterised by a natural flow of conversation, an ease of communication, and a sense of warmth and familiarity. The absence of physical contact, such as hugs and high-fives, is particularly pronounced, and the loss of these non-verbal cues significantly impacts the quality of interaction.
Despite this, numerous individuals have reported a plethora of positive experiences, even in the absence of physical interaction. The advent of virtual interaction has proven to be advantageous, offering benefits that, while not equivalent to in-person interactions, are nevertheless significant. Technology, despite its limitations, has emerged as a crucial lifeline during this period. It is difficult to fathom the nature of this experience in the absence of technological assistance.
KN: What are you most hoping people will take away from the book?
LD: It is my hope that readers will recognise the significance of friendship and prioritise it in their lives. I believe that this book will encourage individuals to reflect on the importance of being a good friend and to emulate this quality in their own lives. Parents often focus on the importance of achievement, yet they do not devote as much attention to the cultivation of friendship skills. However, I believe that friendship skills are among the most crucial competencies that children can develop. The significance of friendship has often been overlooked in the pursuit of academic and professional accomplishments.

Love is one of the most profound emotions experienced by human beings. There are many different types of love, but many people seek to express it in a romantic relationship with a compatible partner. For these individuals, romantic relationships are one of the most meaningful aspects of life and a source of deep fulfilment.
While the need for human connection appears to be innate, the ability to form healthy, loving relationships is learned. Some evidence suggests that this ability begins to develop in infancy, through a child's earliest experiences with a caregiver who reliably provides food, care, warmth, protection, stimulation and social contact. These relationships do not determine one's destiny, but they are theorised to establish deeply ingrained patterns of relating to others. However, the end of a relationship is often a source of great psychological anguish.
How to Build a Healthy Relationship
Maintaining a strong relationship requires constant care and communication, and certain traits have been shown to be especially important for fostering healthy relationships. Firstly, each individual should feel confident that their partner is willing to devote time and attention to them. Both partners must also be willing to accommodate their differences, even as they change over time.
In the 21^(st) century, good relationships are generally characterised by emotional and physical fairness, particularly with regard to the division of household chores. Partners in strong relationships feel grateful for one another, openly show affection and engage in honest discussions about sex.
In good relationships, partners try to give each other the benefit of the doubt, creating a sense of being on the same team. Maintained over the long term, this feeling can help couples to overcome the inevitable challenges they will face together.
How to Find Love
Finding a life partner is a wonderful but often challenging process. Whether conducted online or in person, the search will likely push individuals into unfamiliar situations where they can meet potential partners. To be successful, it is often necessary to step outside one's comfort zone.
Deciding whether someone is suitable as a potential partner and whether a connection is temporary infatuation or true love can be challenging, but research suggests there are clues in behaviour that can help.
One possibly counterintuitive indicator of a potential match is one's sense of self. A good partner may encourage an individual to discover new activities or beliefs that expand their self-concept. Another early signifier may be stress. Repeatedly interacting with someone whose opinion matters deeply to us can cause anxiety. Other positive signs include being highly motivated to spend time with the person and investing significant emotional and energetic resources into the developing relationship.
How Relationships Fail
Every relationship is a leap of faith for at least one partner. Even the happiest couples can eventually become annoyed by the very traits that once attracted them to each other, and this can drive them apart. Acquiring the skills to make a connection last is hard work, and threats may arise without warning. In short-term, casual relationships, neither partner may envisage a viable long-term future together, but often only one takes action. 5) Why You Can't Help Sharing the Things You Love
A new study reveals that the urge to recommend something isn't driven by a desire for self-promotion. It's a gift.

-Receiving a recommendation well is an act of connection in itself.
You already know this feeling: you finish a book and immediately think of three people who need to read it. You hear a song and your first instinct is to send it to someone specific. You find a study on your LinkedIn timeline and forward it without fully processing why.
You probably don't stop to ask yourself why you do this. You just do it.
But the underlying assumption, which you might reach for if pressed, is probably something like: 'I want them to know I found this.' I want to seem like someone who finds things like this.'
However, a study published last month in the Academy of Management Discoveries suggests this assumption is mostly incorrect (Kwon & Bae, 2026).
The researchers studied over 500 real instances of people expressing enthusiasm for their work to colleagues, recommending a project or sharing something that inspired them. The prevailing assumption in prior research was that this kind of display was instrumental. People share enthusiasm to signal commitment, appear competent and advance their reputation.
However, the data told a different story. The dominant motive, by a clear margin, was prosocial. People weren't trying to look good. They were trying to give something: to inspire, uplift and connect.
This finding remained consistent even when controlling for context, relationship type and individual personality differences.
Why We Read It Wrong
Here's the part worth reflecting on: We're not just wrong about our own motives when we share things we love. We're wrong about other people's motives, too.
When someone sends you an article at midnight, quotes a line from a book they think you need to read, or tells you with slightly embarrassing enthusiasm that you have to watch a film, it's easy to assume that they're showing off their taste, knowledge, or relevance.
However, the research suggests that this is usually not the case. It's more like an attempt to hand you something, with no guarantee that you'll want it and no obvious benefit to them if you do.
This changes how the moment is perceived on both sides.
This points towards the idea that if the impulse to share is fundamentally generous, then the way we receive things matters more than we usually acknowledge. The friend who passes on something they love is doing something slightly vulnerable. They're betting that what moved them will move you too. Dismissing that, or not responding at all, is more of a rejection than it might seem.
If you've been second-guessing your own impulse to recommend things, wondering whether you're oversharing or showing off, you probably aren't. You're probably just trying to share something.
That impulse is one of the most human things we do.
A recommendation (naturally)

6) The Relationship Roots of Sadness
Other ratings were obtained regarding chronic health conditions and a history of depression. A standard diagnostic interview was used to assess whether the respondent met the criteria for a major depressive episode, which included experiencing sadness for two consecutive weeks alongside other depressive symptoms.
The findings supported the marital distress model, showing that depression evolved over time even when relevant factors were controlled for. As the authors concluded, 'it is something about the relationship itself that increases risk for depression in a person in a distressed relationship, rather than characteristics of the person'.
Turning Distress into Growth
These findings have important implications for someone like Sally, who is watching her relationship fall apart. It’s no wonder that she is experiencing feelings of depression. Although her personality may have contributed to some of these problems, the main issue now is addressing the relationship factors that are making her so sad.
Whisman and his colleagues believe that their findings have important implications for long-term relationships. The ideal approach for people like Sally would be a couple-based intervention, where both partners receive treatment together. However, if her partner was unwilling to attend therapy with her, Sally could still be helped in other ways. Interpersonal psychotherapy is a method that targets relationship distress as a contributor to depression.
The U. Colorado findings also suggest that viewing depression from an individualistic standpoint rather than in the context of relationships may fail to address important contributors to mental health issues later in life. While it would be easy to attribute Sally's depression solely to her personality, viewing her as part of a troubled couple would make her more likely to receive the necessary support. More importantly, so would her partner.
In summary, problems in long-term relationships can significantly impact the mental health of both partners. Recognising depression as a result of relationship quality can help individuals find a pathway towards greater fulfilment and happiness.

At first, most people present the version of themselves they hope you'll like. Over time, they stop pretending that they always wake up looking effortlessly attractive. They confess to accidentally replying to all recipients on a work email, crying during Pixar films, or telling you about the embarrassing thing they did that still randomly pops into their head before they fall asleep.

People who fear rejection often avoid conflict. They are more likely to agree when they don't mean it or suppress their frustrations.

Ironically, healthy conflict often signals greater security than constant compliance and agreement.
Feeling emotionally safe doesn't mean seeing eye to eye all the time. It means trusting that one disagreement won't threaten the relationship. You stop worrying that every difficult conversation will end with someone walking away.

8) Checks in Balance: The Secret to All Sustainability
Personal perspective: The secret to a happy marriage, a long life and good government.
Key points:
-'Checks and balances' are really 'checks in balance': constraints that prevent things from spinning out of control.
-These constraints are what sustain any fragile system, be it a healthy body, a marriage, a society or a government.
-Games start out in balance. They continue if dominance shifts, but end when the checks are no longer balanced.
-If you want to keep a game going, you have to keep the checks in balance, which isn't easy.
We call them 'checks and balances', but they are not two separate things. Checks and balances are really checks in balance. Checks are constraints that prevent runaway effects, such as the rich getting richer, the crazy getting crazier and the wild getting wilder. Balanced checks prevent runaway effects in every direction.
This is what we call the 'rule of law', but authoritarian states that have fallen into runaway effects also have the rule of law. Hitler and Stalin had the rule of law. It was the rich and powerful who ruled and made the laws until the checks and balances got way out of whack.
We call this liberalism, but that doesn't quite capture it either. It's not just about loosening things. It's about loosening and tightening things in such a way that they stay in balance. It's like auto mechanics: tighten here, loosen there, so the bolts don't fly off, the engine doesn't seize up and the car doesn't collapse.
It's like life itself. It's about your life with other people, but also your biological life. You are your own balancing act. As we age, things get out of balance. Death results from an imbalance of these checks, a cascade of runaway effects where one out-of-whack consequence leads to another until the whole house of cards falls apart and there are no more checks in balance.
When we play a game, we want to win. A good game starts out with the balance just about right. An exciting game involves alternating dominance, with one team taking the lead and then the other until one team ultimately wins, and you hope it's yours. The same applies to wars, which we hope will end in victory for our side.
But what if you wanted to keep the game going? You don't want it to end. You want your life and good government to continue. How do you achieve that? With checks and balances.
Maintaining checks and balances is difficult. It’s not easy to stay balanced. Your body works hard to maintain them. A healthy marriage works hard to maintain balance, too. We’d rather feel unchecked and liberated. We bridle at feeling constrained. We get outraged. We cry “It's not fair!” and assume that this proves we are fair-minded.
This is all the more true when it comes to a marriage of millions — a country trying to keep its house of cards from toppling over as the wealthy elite impose rules that make them richer. They are no longer playing the game, but gaming the system.
Nevertheless, it is worth knowing what the goal is: not 'checks and balances', not 'rule of law', not 'liberalism', but checks in balance.
9) 6 Healthy Relationship Habits Most People Think Are Toxic
A while back, I wrote a post titled '6 Signs You’re in a Toxic Relationship'. Since I published it, the article has attracted a lot of comments — and you know it’s hit a nerve when major websites that are paid to publish intelligent content ask if they can copy and paste it, presumably to generate advertising revenue from the negative comments it would attract.
(I know, I’m such a sellout.)
However, I believe it has helped many people. Since writing it, I’ve received a staggering number of thank-you emails, and around two dozen people have told me that it inspired them to end a relationship (or, in a few cases, a marriage). It seems to have served as a kind of wake-up call, helping people to finally let go and accept that sometimes relationships are just not working out.
So, I guess I’m a home-wrecker and a sell-out – sweet.
Along with the praise, however, I also received lots of questions such as, “If these habits ruin a relationship, what habits create a happy and healthy one?”, “Where’s an article on what makes a relationship great?” and “Mark, how did you get so handsome?”.
These are important questions. And they deserve answers.
Admittedly, when I was younger, I had far more experience of messing up relationships than making them work well. However, in the years since, I’ve started to get things right more often than not (yes, Fernanda?), so I didn’t want to write just another “learn to communicate, cuddle, watch sunsets and play with puppies together” type of post. Honestly, those posts are awful. If you love your partner, you shouldn't need to be told to hold hands and watch sunsets together — it should be automatic.
I wanted to write something different. I wanted to address issues that are important in relationships but harder to face, such as fighting, hurting each other's feelings, dealing with dissatisfaction and feeling occasional attraction for other people. These are normal, everyday relationship issues that don't get talked about because it's easier to talk about puppies and sunsets.
So, I wrote this: the first article's bizarre twin. The first article explained that many of our culture’s tacitly accepted relationship habits secretly erode intimacy, trust and happiness. This article explains that traits which do not fit our traditional narrative of what love is and should be are actually necessary for a lasting relationship.

1. Letting some conflicts go unresolved
There’s a man named John Gottman who is considered the Michael Jordan of relationship research. Not only has he been studying intimate relationships for more than forty years, he also practically invented the field.
He devised a process called “thin-slicing”, where he hooks couples up to a series of biometric devices and records them having short conversations. He then goes back and analyses the conversations frame by frame, looking at biometric data, body language, tonality and specific words chosen. He combines all this data to predict whether your marriage will be successful.
His 'thin-slicing' process boasts a 91% success rate in predicting whether newlywed couples will divorce within ten years — a remarkably high result for any psychological research (Malcolm Gladwell discusses Gottman's findings in his bestseller Blink). Gottman's seminars also report a 50% higher success rate in saving troubled marriages than traditional marriage counselling. His research papers have won enough academic awards to fill the state of Delaware. He has also written nine books on intimate relationships, marital therapy and the science of trust.
In short, when it comes to understanding what makes long-term relationships succeed, John Gottman is in a class of his own.
The first thing Gottman says in almost all of his books is:
The idea that couples must communicate and resolve all their problems is a myth.
In his research on thousands of happily married couples, some of whom have been married for over forty years, he repeatedly found that the most successful couples have persistent, unresolved issues that they have sometimes been arguing about for decades. Meanwhile, many unsuccessful couples insisted on resolving everything because they believed that they should never disagree. Pretty soon, their relationship was void.
Successful couples accept and understand that conflict is inevitable and that there will always be things they don't like about their partner or disagree with, and that's OK. You shouldn't feel the need to change someone in order to love them. You shouldn't let disagreements get in the way of an otherwise happy and healthy relationship.
Sometimes, trying to resolve a conflict can create more problems than it solves. Some battles are simply not worth fighting. Sometimes, the best approach is to live and let live.

So, what constitutes a healthy relationship?
Every romantic relationship is unique, and people come together for many different reasons. One thing that defines a healthy relationship is having a shared vision of what you want the relationship to be and where you want it to go. This is something you can only discover by having deep and honest conversations with your partner.
However, there are also some characteristics that most healthy relationships have in common. Understanding these basic principles can help to ensure that your relationship remains meaningful, fulfilling and exciting, whatever goals you are working towards or challenges you are facing together.
You maintain a meaningful emotional connection with each other. You make each other feel loved and emotionally fulfilled. There’s a difference between being loved and feeling loved. When you feel loved, it makes you feel accepted and valued by your partner — like someone truly understands you. Some relationships become stuck in peaceful coexistence without the partners truly relating to each other emotionally. While the relationship may seem stable on the surface, a lack of ongoing emotional connection will only add distance between you.
You’re not afraid of respectful disagreement. Some couples talk things out quietly, while others may raise their voices and disagree passionately. The key to a strong relationship, though, is not to be afraid of conflict. In fact, expecting too much from your partner can put unhealthy pressure on a relationship. In order to stimulate and enrich your romantic relationship, it is important to maintain your own identity outside of the relationship, preserve connections with good friends and family, and continue to pursue your hobbies and interests.

9) 6 Healthy Relationship Habits Most People Think Are Toxic
A while back, I wrote a post titled '6 Signs You’re in a Toxic Relationship'. Since I published it, the article has attracted a lot of comments — and you know it’s hit a nerve when major websites that are paid to publish intelligent content ask if they can copy and paste it, presumably to generate advertising revenue from the negative comments it would attract.
(I know, I’m such a sellout.)
However, I believe it has helped many people. Since writing it, I’ve received a staggering number of thank-you emails, and around two dozen people have told me that it inspired them to end a relationship (or, in a few cases, a marriage). It seems to have served as a kind of wake-up call, helping people to finally let go and accept that sometimes relationships are just not working out.
So, I guess I’m a home-wrecker and a sell-out – sweet.
Along with the praise, however, I also received lots of questions such as, “If these habits ruin a relationship, what habits create a happy and healthy one?”, “Where’s an article on what makes a relationship great?” and “Mark, how did you get so handsome?”.
These are important questions. And they deserve answers.
Admittedly, when I was younger, I had far more experience of messing up relationships than making them work well. However, in the years since, I’ve started to get things right more often than not (yes, Fernanda?), so I didn’t want to write just another “learn to communicate, cuddle, watch sunsets and play with puppies together” type of post. Honestly, those posts are awful. If you love your partner, you shouldn't need to be told to hold hands and watch sunsets together — it should be automatic.
I wanted to write something different. I wanted to address issues that are important in relationships but harder to face, such as fighting, hurting each other's feelings, dealing with dissatisfaction and feeling occasional attraction for other people. These are normal, everyday relationship issues that don't get talked about because it's easier to talk about puppies and sunsets.
So, I wrote this: the first article's bizarre twin. The first article explained that many of our culture’s tacitly accepted relationship habits secretly erode intimacy, trust and happiness. This article explains that traits which do not fit our traditional narrative of what love is and should be are actually necessary for a lasting relationship.
